NEXT: National Exit Test

Until 2019, the Medical Council of India (MCI) regulated the standards of medical education in India. All students pursuing an MBBS abroad from MCI-approved universities were required to appear for a licensing exam known as the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE). This was also referred to as the MCI Screening Test or Medical Council of India Screening Test.

The FMGE was a qualification exam for students who completed their MBBS abroad and wished to practice medicine in India. The screening test was first introduced in 2002. However, following the dissolution of the MCI, it was replaced by the National Medical Commission (NMC) on September 25, 2020.

What is the National Exit Test (NEXT)?

The National Medical Commission (NMC) aims to bring comprehensive reforms to medical education and healthcare in India. Among its key objectives are:

  • Improving access to quality and affordable medical education.

  • Ensuring a sufficient supply of highly qualified medical professionals nationwide.

  • Promoting equitable and universal healthcare that is accessible to all.

  • Encouraging the integration of the latest medical research into clinical practice.

  • Maintaining a transparent and objective assessment of medical institutions.

  • Enforcing high ethical standards in the medical profession.

In line with these goals, the NEXT (National Exit Test) was introduced as a common exit exam for all MBBS graduates in India. This new exam will serve several critical purposes:

  1. Eligibility for Internship: NEXT will determine whether an MBBS graduate is eligible to pursue their mandatory internship.

  2. Licensure to Practice Medicine: NEXT will serve as the gateway for all MBBS graduates to obtain the license required to practice medicine across India.

  3. Postgraduate Admissions: The exam will play a pivotal role in determining eligibility for Medical Postgraduate (PG) courses. Students’ scores and rankings in NEXT will directly impact their chances of securing a seat in PG medical education.

The NMC Bill 2019 merges the MBBS exit exam and the licensure exam into one streamlined process. This unified test will determine a student’s readiness to enter the workforce, further their medical education, and practice medicine in India.
